JOB TITLE:                 Organist/Pianist 

REPORTS TO:            Minister of Music 

DEPARTMENT:           Music   

PURPOSE:                 To assist the church in its music ministry by providing organ/piano support of the Sanctuary Choir, worship services, weddings, funerals and special programs as determined by the Minister of Music and/or Pastoral Leaders. The Organist/Pianist will be supervised and guided by the Minister of Music within the Worship Support Team. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Play the piano and organ for regular and special worship services, including accompaniment for hymns, choir anthems, seasonal cantatas, instrumentalists, soloists, and provide preludes, postludes, and offertories as directed. Provide music for weddings, funerals, and special programs.

  • Provide piano music for the opening assembly on Sunday morning prior to Sunday School.

  • Provide piano music for weekly Choir Rehearsals and special Seasonal extra rehearsals as coordinated with the Minister of Music (currently Thursdays at 7:30 pm).

  • Work with the Minister of Music to prepare instrumental duets on a regular, but not fixed schedule, basis.

  • Work as part of the Worship Leadership team, consisting of the Minister of Music, Pastors, Retired Organist, and Lay Worship Leader to develop and implement music programs for the church.

  • Personally rehearse and present special music programs for church holy days, seasons, and serve as Music Minister vacation substitute when needed.

  • Coordinate Organist/Pianist substitute coverage with the Minister of Music.

  • May be asked to attend music conferences on an occasional basis.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

  • Master’s degree in music preferred; bachelor’s degree acceptable with commensurate training or work experience.

  • Previous experience as organist and piano accompanist; multiple years’ experience preferred.

  • Experience sight-reading music of moderate difficulty with musicality to enhance and support vocal or instrumental performers.

  • Prior experience as a member of church music leadership team preferred. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Good written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Attention to detail.

  • Must demonstrate capability, desire, and initiative in playing diverse styles of music.

  • General flexibility and willingness to experiment with creative ideas.

  • Willingness to demonstrate patience with lay musicians, including the ability to teach, encourage and demonstrate musical performance ideals.

  • Christian background is preferred; it is not necessary to be a member of The United Baptist Church or be affiliated with Baptist faith communities, but a commitment to ministry is desired.

  • Written recommendations from previous music associates and/or employers, attesting to musical ability and character. Personal knowledge of the candidate’s abilities by the Pastoral Leaders and /or the Minister of Music will suffice in lieu of the written requirements.

  • Organ and piano auditions are required and a brief interview with Personnel Committee, Minister of Music, and Senior Minister. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

Part time Instrumentalist Position. Salary commensurate with education and experience:

$12,000-18,000

Salary may be negotiated between the candidate and the Personnel Committee based on salary provided in the church budget. All other compensation issues will be in accordance with the Personnel Policies of The United Baptist Church. Read more . . .  ​
